Ostrom makes switching to green energy as economical and as effortless as possible for households in Germany.
Ostrom offers just one flexible monthly tariff, end-to-end English & German support from the website to the live customer care chat, and only purchases 100% green energy. We upend all the headaches of the German energy industry where 12 to 24-month lock-ins, non-existent customer service and paper & fax-based backend processes are the status quo.
The norm for energy contracts in Germany is to lure customers with a large upfront discount but a long lock-in period which they hope to automatically extend by another 1-2 years - giving traditional utilities a lock-and-forget incentive. By offering users simplicity and flexibility, Ostrom is aiming to push the green energy transition further.
In the future, Ostrom sees the increasing adoption of smart meters & electric vehicles as further areas of opportunity to increase our scope.
The idea for Ostrom came from Matthias during his time advising energy companies at Oliver Wyman. Upon seeing how manual and bureaucratic everything was - such as 90% offline marketing budgets to highly manual backend processes, he decided to leave and pursue creating a better energy utility for Germany around December 2020.
Karl joined several weeks later to help with the user acquisition & UX, having previously worked in several B2C startups and was also on the lookout for founding a startup after joining the Berlin cohort of Entrepreneur First.
After a few months of development the early MVP was released on April 2021 and we have been already serving several customers while continuing to refine our product and operations.
